It's good to be king -- just ask the 2017 Ford Explorer.

A veritable living legend of the American automaker, the Explorer is also one of the most popular vehicles across the entire full-size SUV segment.

Yet, what -- specifically -- makes it so?

The good folks at MotorWeek are here to provide the need-to-know details; ride out with them in the clip below:

No bones about it -- Ford delivered a doozy with the Explorer's entry-level engine, a 3.5-liter V6.

Making a hearty 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, the base V6 pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard; an all-wheel system, meanwhile, is optional.

We're also quite keen on the fuel economy of this engine. When had with front-wheel drive, for example, it's expected to return a respectable 20 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway).
